In medical school we didn’t learn much about addiction and I didn’t really understand much about this a junior doctor. Since then, I have come to realise it is a problem which can affect anyone in society old or young, rich or poor. It can cause devastation to people’s lives, work, family and friends. Like Gabor Mate says the drink or drug isn’t really the problem, they are the solution people use to numb or cope with the problem. Helping people rebuild themselves and regain control of their lives is very rewarding.
I have recently joined the lighthouse team, and I am impressed by the passion for recovery and care provided by the staff and wider team. I aim to provide compassionate medical advice for anyone entering treatment who may need it.
In my personal time I am kept busy by my wife, children and pets. I do enjoy watching sports on the television and relaxing with a bit of PlayStation. I also attend the local NA group and chair an online support group.
